Wind Symphony (MU135) At GVHS, the Wind Symphony is comprised of the most advanced instrumental musicians. The Wind Symphony will perform wind band literature of the highest quality, and will include the study of advanced instrumental technique and ensemble skills. Ear training skills, music theory, history, composition, and appropriate rehearsal/performance disciplines will be taught and maintained within the group throughout the year. All students involved in the Wind Symphony are also required to participate in the GVHS Marching Band during first semester. Symphonic Band (MU140) At GVHS, the Symphonic Band is comprised of intermediate instrumental music students who choose to participate in Band while developing the musical proficiency required for Wind Symphony. The Symphonic Band will perform appropriate wind band literature of the highest quality, and will include the study of instrumental technique and ensemble skills. Ear training skills, music theory, history, composition, and appropriate rehearsal/performance disciplines will be taught and maintained within the group throughout the year. All students involved in the Symphonic Band are also required to participate in the GVHS Marching Band during first semester. Concert Band (MU105) At GVHS, the Concert Band is comprised of instrumental music students who choose to participate in Band while developing the musical proficiency required for Symphonic Band or Wind Symphony. No audition is required for participation in Concert Bands, but students must have previous Band experience. The Concert Band will focus on the further development of individual technique, musicianship, and ensemble skills through the study and performance of quality Band repertoire. Ear training skills, music theory, history, composition, and appropriate rehearsal/performance disciplines will be taught and maintained within the group throughout the year. All Concert Band students are expected to participate in the GVHS Marching Band during first semester. Expectations: Participation in all Band classes carries with it the responsibility of attendance at ALL scheduled rehearsals and performances, which may involve time outside of the regular school day. The Marching Band does not meet during the school day, but is an extension of the daily Band curriculum. While not required, students are highly encouraged to take private lessons. Students may be required to participate in District/State small ensemble contest, and are highly encouraged to audition for various honor band/all-state opportunities. Students are expected to make the commitment to fully participate in all rehearsals and performances. Rehearsals begin during the summer and will include additional rehearsals outside of class time. Performances include concerts, festivals, competitions, parades, pep band, and various community events.
